What is the difference between a semi-trailer and a trailer?

In China's transportation industry, semi-trailer is a more widely used model, which plays a great role in the transportation of goods. According to the different types of goods transported, the semi-trailer can be subdivided into columnar plate, warehouse grid, low flat plate, van, tank, container, skeleton and other types.

Under normal circumstances, the semi-trailer itself does not have a driving force, and often needs to use the power of the tractor to achieve driving, that is, the semi-trailer needs to be dragged forward by the tractor. Therefore, many owners are also used to calling semi-trailers trailers or towing trailers.


Is a semi-trailer and a trailer the same type of vehicle?


Not exactly the same model. Although from the model point of view, semi-trailer and trailer refer to their own unpowered models that need to be powered by tractors, the difference between the two is still more obvious, and this difference is mainly in the connection with the tractor.

The difference between semi-trailer and trailer:


1, the connection between the semi-trailer and the tractor mainly rely on the saddle and traction pin, these two parts are the key parts of the semi-trailer connection force, through the locking mechanism connection, in the vehicle operation by multi-dimensional space torque, alternating load, dynamic impact force, etc.


From the appearance, after the semi-trailer is connected with the tractor, the front end of the semi-trailer is attached to the rear end of the tractor, and the steering function is achieved by the saddle, as shown in the following figure:


2. The connection between the trailer and the tractor mainly relies on the traction bar, and the tow bar of the trailer is hung on the hook of the tractor, as shown in the following figure:


Such a connection can make the trailer maintain a certain ability to swing left and right or swing up and down during the driving process, which can improve the flexibility of the trailer and is more suitable for use under complex road conditions; At the same time, the difficulty of driving has also improved a lot, especially when reversing and driving, the stability will be affected to a certain extent.


It is also for this reason that trailers are generally more used in fields, airports, stations, logistics parks, and less used in specialized freight scenarios.

Whether it is a semi-trailer or a trailer, the axles used are generally typical support Bridges and do not have drive or steering functions.


The tonnage of the semi-trailer axle is generally between 13t-25t, the main lightweight semi-trailer axle is about 10t, and the heavy-duty semi-trailer special bridge, such as the three-line six-axis, can reach 80t or even hundreds of tons.


In contrast, the tonnage of the trailer is relatively small, generally concentrated in 3t-10t, of which 5t and 8t are the most common. Compared with the semi-trailer, the trailer axle is more niche, and the parameters are not uniform, and most need to be customized.
