Today we will focus on another auxiliary brake device that is often discussed with ABS - the EBS system.

What is EBS?


EBS is the abbreviation of Electronic Brake Systems, translated into Chinese is "electronic brake system" meaning. EBS is based on the evolution of ABS upgrades, contains all the functions of ABS, and replaces the traditional mechanical control module with a more advanced electronic control system, so it can also be called electronically controlled ABS.


EBS is not a new product, and it has been popularized on commercial vehicles in Europe and the United States since about 2000. Later, with the continuous development of domestic vehicle technology and the continuous tightening of relevant regulations, EBS also gradually appeared on domestic commercial vehicles.


How EBS works


When the vehicle is braking, the sensor collects the speed and travel of the pedal and transmits its signal to the central ECU. The central ECU determines the speed reduction required by the driver according to the signal, and then calculates the brake pressure required by each brake chamber according to factors such as vehicle weight, and controls the opening of the pneumatic brake valve, so that the compressed air passes through the air storage cylinder, the brake pipeline and the brake chamber to generate braking force.

Benefits and capabilities of EBS


Functional EBS is also much more powerful than ABS, such as prevention of forward tilt control, speed reduction control, brake force distribution, main mount consistent control, auxiliary brake integration, pit stop, friction plate wear control, brake temperature monitoring, etc., are very practical. In addition, EBS gas path delays are shorter, resulting in faster braking response times and shorter braking distances. EBS is based on the electronic control system, so it can expand more auxiliary functions, with it as a working platform, can be derived from the body stability control (ESC/ESP), anti-rolover system (RSC), drive anti-slip (ASR), ramp assistance (HSA), etc., more in line with the development trend of information and intelligence.

Why is the penetration rate of EBS inferior to ABS in China?


EBS is easy to use, but the price is also expensive, especially when EBS has just been launched in China, the price can be about 30-40,000 yuan higher than without EBS. Later, the domestic relevant technology continues to improve, more and more tractor factory configuration of EBS system, its price has also decreased to a certain extent, but it is still not as good as the price of ABS is easier for owners to accept.


Secondly, the EBS original factory comes with more, and the subsequent installation is less, because the installation difficulty of EBS is higher than that of ABS. The principle and structure of the EBS system are more complex, and if you want it to fully cooperate with the original components and play its due function after installation, it is almost necessary to review all the braking system of the vehicle, which has high technical requirements and a lot of labor costs.

In addition, from the point of view of vehicle main hanger matching, when the tractor is equipped with EBS system, the trailer should also be installed with EBS, so as to maintain a good braking effect, otherwise, even if the trailer is installed with ABS system, the main car may respond first and the trailer responds later, leading to the phenomenon of pushing the head. The main car and trailer are all installed EBS, which is also a large cost, and some owners with small budgets have backed off.


At present, EBS is mainly used for imported cars and high-end commercial vehicles, and most ordinary vehicles choose more ABS systems. It is worth mentioning that whether it is EBS or ABS, as an auxiliary braking system, its advantages rely on the response speed of the active braking system of the vehicle to a certain extent, from this point of view, the disc trailer axle is more suitable for use with the EBS/ABS system than the drum trailer axle, the brake response is fast, the braking frequency is high. It can make the auxiliary braking system play the maximum efficiency.
