What are the four types of axle?

The common axle can be divided into four types: drive axle, steering axle, steering drive axle and support axle.

1. Drive axle

The drive axle is generally composed of a reducer, a differential, a half-shaft and a axle housing, etc., generally installed at the end of the transmission system, which can change the speed and torque from the transmission, and transmit it to the drive wheel and drive the vehicle.

The common drive axle can be divided into three categories: central single-stage deceleration drive axle, central two-stage deceleration drive axle, and central single-stage wheel side deceleration drive axle. Among them, the central single-stage deceleration drive axle is the simplest one in the drive axle structure, which is widely used in heavy duty trucks; The central two-stage reduction drive axle is a type derived when the speed ratio of the single-stage axle exceeds a certain value or the total traction mass is large. Wheel deceleration drive axle is more widely used in oil fields, construction sites, mines and other off-road vehicles and military vehicles.

2. Steering bridge

As the name suggests, the steering bridge refers to the axle that undertakes the steering task, usually located in the front of the vehicle, in addition to the vertical load of the vehicle, but also the longitudinal force and lateral force and the torque caused by it. The working principle of the steering bridge is mainly to use the steering knuckle in the axle to deflect the wheels at both ends at a certain Angle to achieve the steering of the vehicle.

3. Steering drive axle

The so-called steering drive axle refers to the axle that undertakes both steering tasks and power transmission tasks, such as front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles, and the front axle is a typical steering drive axle. Structurally, the steering drive axle has the main reducer, differential and half shaft of the general drive axle, and the steering knuckle and kingpin of the steering axle are also set up.

4. Support the bridge

Support bridge is also called driven bridge, generally installed in the rear wheel of the vehicle, such as the common trailer bridge is a driven bridge, do not need to transmit vehicle power, do not need to bear the steering function, the main task is to bear the weight of the body, and then can ease road bumps, ensure vehicle braking, maintain vehicle driving and so on.

Trailer axle assembly breakdown drawing and name

Under normal circumstances, the trailer axle can be broken down into several parts, such as the total shaft composition, camshaft assembly, brake assembly, shaft end assembly and other parts.

The shaft body consists of shaft beam, brake bottom plate, spherical bearing seat, air chamber seat, ABS support seat, etc.

Camshaft assembly includes camshaft, washer, bushing, spherical bearing seal ring, shaft retaining ring, etc.;

The brake assembly includes brake pads, rollers, retracting springs, reset springs, fixing pins, etc.

The shaft end assembly includes brake drum, wheel hub, bearing ABS gear ring, oil seal, dust cover, wheel hub cover, etc.

Other parts such as stop washer, shaft nut, adjusting arm, cotter pin, ABS sensor, etc.
