1. Is the disc axle heating up too fast?


Why do disc axles heat up faster than drum axles? It starts with the structure of the disc axle.


Compared with the traditional drum axle, the disc axle is smaller in volume, especially the friction area during braking, compared with the drum axle is much smaller. Because of the small friction area, the disc axle does rise faster than the drum axle when braking under the same brake load.


However, we do not forget that the disc axle brake disc, friction plate is directly exposed in the air, its heat dissipation rate is much faster than the drum, so although the temperature is fast, cooling is also very fast, generally will not appear overheating.

It can not only ensure the braking strength, but also effectively avoid the overheating of the brake disc, and also prolong the service life of the disc brake.


2. Small disc trailer axle braking force?


It is also because disc axle and drum axle compared with the braking friction area is smaller, its braking force, especially for heavy semi-trailer full load, is smaller than drum axle to a certain extent, which is also one of the reasons why disc axle is widely used in passenger cars and less used in semi-trailer.


But this problem is not irreconcilable, as we mentioned above, for those trailers that often carry heavy goods, or trailers that often need to run mountain roads, they can be used with hydraulic retarder and other tractor braking devices, which can make up for the shortcomings of small disc axle braking.


In addition, owners need to understand that although the disc axle is used alone when the braking force is less than the drum axle, but it is better than the drum axle in the braking response speed. Drum axle braking system has a set of complex structure, such as the brake drum, pump, arm adjustment, and so on. When the owner steps on the brake, these components need to react one by one, and finally realize the braking, which is to a certain extent full of response speed. Disc axle is different, it does not have so many switching devices in the middle, the pump can push the caliper directly for braking, so the response speed is faster, more timely braking.


It can be seen that once the disc axle is matched with the hydraulic retarder, the super combination of fast braking response speed, strong braking force and more stable and reliable braking will be realized. If ABS and EBS systems are installed on the vehicle, it can prevent the wheel from locking in case of emergency braking, and enable the trailer to stop smoothly in the shortest distance, far better than the traditional drum axle.


3. Disk axle is easy to be damaged by water


In the past, many owners in the drum axle, like to use water to cool the axle. But after the change of disc axle, this practice is very undesirable, why?


Drum axle because the braking system is wrapped in the brake drum inside, is a closed structure, in the process of vehicle driving natural cooling speed is very slow, so the need for water cooling. However, the disc axle is not closed structure, the cooling speed of the vehicle in the process of driving is very fast, there is no need for additional water cooling.
